Personal computers execute programs locally using their own processing power. This makes them powerful and flexible, and on the flip-side, complex and subject to misconfigurations and hardware failures. The useable service life of a PC (thick) client is limited, e.g. machines that were new five years ago are outdated to the point that not all modern software will operate on them. Data stored locally must be backed up somehow, and viral threats must also be addressed locally. Thick clients have an important place in the business environment, as some applications will only operate when installed and executed in the traditional mode. Many peripherals such as multi-function printer/fax/scanners and CD-burners can be supported. Laptops and tablet PCs are currently only available as thick clients. Thick clients can access all applications in the ACS-IDS through your web browser.
